Omaha Poker is a community poker game of unknown origin. It was first introduced at the Las Vegas Golden Nugget casino as Nugget Hold-em.
The game can be played from 2 up to 9 players and is fairly simple in that each player is dealt four cards and there are five community cards dealt face up in the center of the table. The aim of the game is for each player to use two of their dealt cards and three of the community cards to form the highest hand possible. A standard pack of 52 cards is used and dealing is in a clockwise rotation.
There are a number of variations of betting structures, but generally only two types are used in Omaha Poker, a pot limit and a fixed limit, with the most common of these being the pot limit.
There are specifics in this game as each person has the opportunity to be the first receiver of the dealt card from the dealer. The first receiver is the ‘Button’, the person first left of the button is known as the ‘small blind’ and directly left of them is the ‘big blind’.
The player directly left of the big blind is referred to as ‘under the gun’. Betting starts from the button, then to the small blind then to the big blind, the under the gun person can then start procedures by either, folding (discarding), raising or calling the big blind, and the game is underway.
The game will continue as players increase the bet/stakes until one will ‘call’ another player to show their cards to determine who has the winning hand. The ranking of hands is the same as in standard poker.
